are out of context words spoken by Lord Shiva in the ‘Shri Padma Purana’ Uttara Khanda during a conversation with Devi Parvati Devi.
There are 4 versions of ‘Sri Vishnu-SahasraNama’ – they are all very different both in meaning and in complexity.
It is not necessary, it is your own will. However, it would undoubtedly be helpful if someone chanted the names of God. Physically, mentally and spiritually chanting the names of God with love and devotion will undoubtedly help a person to attain the Supreme Truth. From the point of view of a bhakta, God is pleased with the one who chants His name daily, thus He liberates Him. From the other point of view, one who repeats the names of God daily identifies Himself with God and therefore ultimately sees His True Nature. The perspective of karma – chanting the name of God – forget everything else – Vairagya.
Whirlwind of Mind
One of the main tasks on the Path of Bhakti is to glorify the glories of the Lord in countless ways. Some folk read the saga of his vitality. Some sing songs like bhajans. Yet, others sing hymns.
The feelings of the pure devotees live in God, God’s presence will encircle God’s devotees and they achieve great dignity and bliss by enlightening one another and reciting about God.
God is considered beyond attributes and the reach of mind and word. However, on the Path of Bhakti, the Lord is also the supreme teacher and is considered to be the embodiment of all virtuous qualities, Kalyana-gunas.
By concentrating the mind on the attributes of the Lord, described in thousands of names, the devotee has the opportunity to constantly concentrate on the Lord.
For example, the meaning of chanting Vishnu Sahasranam is explained here:
Each of the thousand names is enormous of implication and cites to one special guna (quality, standard, characteristic ) of Paramatma. These names stimulate a feeling of relationship with the Lord. The meanings of the names give us an understanding and depth of God because there is a deep connection between the name and the names.
The need for regular cleansing of our body to maintain hygiene and good health is recognized by everyone. But with the busy nature of today’s world, we don’t see our minds the same way we see our bodies. As a consequence, the need to keep our mind pure is not appreciated … Prayers are a means to purify the mind when chanted with sincerity and devotion.
Similar are the advantages of chanting the sahasranama of any God such as Lalita sahasranama and so on.
It’s necessary? This is one of the many paths on the path of devotion. Each devotee can choose his technique according to his inclination and ability.
Chanting them is one of the most common practices in many Hindu families. It has been present for centuries and continues in tradition. They have a soothing impact on the psyche.
It is also one of the recommended practices of Adi Shankara in his Bhaja Govinda, which is regarded as a beginner’s treatise for many Vedanta disciples. This verse covers the synthesis of Bhakti, Satsang and Mercy.
Vocalize the Gita. Say a thousand names of the Lord. Meditate constantly on Shripati. Spend time with good company. Give your wealth to the weak and needy.
From my point of view, everyone can chant Vishnu Sahasranamam, regardless of religion, caste, gender or economic status. Castes and religions were created by humans, not God!!
Lord Vishnu is beyond this caste and religion because He is Para-Brahman, who is untouched by such materialistic things.
Lord Vishnu is Bhakta Vatsal, that is, one who always saves His devotees and has the greatest love for His devotees.
That is why He ran from His abode of Vaikunta to save the Elephant named Gajendra from the crocodile and gave Moksha to the Elephant.
Naama (Names) and Rupa (Forms) are for sentient beings, not for God.
