How you feel about Mars placements depends in large part on how you feel about Mars as a planet and what it stands for. In classical astrology it was known as the “lesser malefic”—a bad-news planet, signifying conflict and violence. Wherever it showed up in the chart was where you would have these things in your life.
And, indeed, Mars does stand for self-assertion, and points to our initiative, competitiveness, and our willingness to fight. Its placement by sign and house indicates what kinds of things make us angry, what causes we’re willing to fight for, and where conflict is likely to arise in our life. In the 8th house, the issues will be around shared resources and shared values. When we enter into a close relationship such as marriage, we need to work out how we’re going to manage things together, as a team. How we handle things like money, sex, chores, and child-raising is no longer up to us individually, but becomes a shared issue that we will have to work out and, probably, keep working out.
A basic meaning of Mars in the 8th is reliance on other people’s resources in order to fulfill one’s own personal goals. If everyone is happy with the arrangement, then this can be fortunate—“good”—indeed, for then you have the chance to do your thing while enjoying the support of others. If you’re a pimp living off the avails of prostitutes, then that is not so good; but if you’re doing artistic or charitable work with the use of others’ resources, then perhaps that’s the only way for the work in question to get done.
Mars in the 8th might also point to someone who can act effectively on others’ behalf with respect to their resources, with things like investing and wealth management. It also suggests a heightened sexual and creative nature, and many people would regard these things as good.
As ever, the aspects to Mars will be important in showing how it will manifest in any given case. Hard aspects will tend to bring out the conflict side of these issues, while flowing aspects will bring out the supportive and harmonious sides.
The operation of Mars, more than that of any other planet, depends on how selfish we are. In a basic sense it is the planet of selfishness. We all have a selfish side, as well as certain self-interests that are entirely legitimate and just; all these are ruled by Mars. The 8th house puts all this to the test, in a sense, since it rules other people’s things and other people’s issues. The highest use of Mars in the 8th, I suppose, is in finding win-win situations. I suspect that the placement of Mars in this house gives one special ability to do this.
