The letters ascribed to each quarter of Nakshatra is a later day development just to know the degree of Nakshatra for calculating the Dasha of planets and it has no luck related meaning whatsoever . For example if you have 10 employees , you may use their name for identification but when you have hundreds of employees , then you allot an employee number for distinguishing the similar names .
Astrologers in old days of poor literacy rate among people, decided to divide all 27 nakshatra into four parts called “Pada” or steps , so there would be 108 parts of total zodiac of 360 degrees and 12 Rashis. This way each rashi had 9 parts while each Nakshatra had 4 parts of 3 degree 20 minutes each . This corresponded to Navansh ( D-9) Chart also.
Now, to remember each such part, they allotted one specific letter , which was used in beginning of the name by the concerned person. So, if “Pe” was allotted to some person, then he / she could be named Prem Kumar ,Perumal, Premlata etc and this is called Rashi Naam . Now by just knowing a rashinaam Prem , an astrologer or anybody who knows Indian astrology , would draw several conclusions as given below :
The person was born under Moon Sign Virgo , the Nakshatra was Chitra in first part , giving Moon degrees in Virgo between 23.33 to 26.66 degrees . This information can be used to co-relate his / her characteristics matching with Virgo or Chitra personality and can also be used to guess the planet of current Mahadasha , as this person will have the Mahadasha of Mars till about 5 years age and depending upon current age , person’s current Mahadasha can be easily guessed by fixed planet dasha periods.
This much information can be further used to know his / her current Saturn or Jupiter transit and so 30-40% predictions can be guessed about the person, just by knowing the correct Rashi name .
It was used by astrologers to know quickly about so many things without making calculations or looking for the chart every time . Since this method disclosed many features of person to everybody if one has common name and Rashiname same , so people started keeping it secret and have different common name and would tell rashi name to astrologer only.
Personally , I think this system evolved much after Ramayan period , so Lord Rama escaped such naming or he was just given a popular name as people do now a days.
Finally , I would emphasise it again that Rashi Name has no other significance or relation with good or bad luck and it is just a code to remember the Nakshatra degrees only.
